Bedlington Terrier Dog

Bedlington Terrier Dog breed information is available on the web, so if you are thinking about obtaining a Bedlington Terrier, you can familiarize yourself with all dos and don’ts about the breed and see if you have the nerve to raise and train such a dog. Bedlington Terriers, despite their gentle and cute appearance, are quite rambunctious and obstinate dogs. Not all of them can get on well with other pets, and some species are dog-aggressive. They are not always easy to train for novice owners, and hence they are recommended for experienced and knowledgeable dog lovers.

The breed originated in the 18th century, in England. Originally, the dog was used as a vermin controller and proved efficient in hunting small game. Bedlington Terrier Dogs were popular among Gypsies, and sometimes they were even referred to as “Gypsy Dogs”. The dog’s unbelievable endurance, thirst for action and assertive temperament have earned him a reputation of one of the most reliable and intelligent companions. Bedlington Terriers can work in various terrains. They do very well in agility and obedience competitions.

Bedlington Terriers appreciate all sorts of interaction. They thrive on attention and show infinite desire to please their owners by carrying out whatever they are demanded to. These dogs cannot tolerate loneliness, and may become extremely vocal if bored or neglected for a long time. They tend to bark even in everyday life, so they must be trained to be quiet. Bedlington Terrier Dogs love to spend a lot of time outdoors, and it is absolutely imperative that they have a chance to play and run on a daily basis. They do okay with a medium-sized yard and enjoy daily walks.

The breed is famous for its unique lamb-like appearance. Bedlington terriers have a crisp and curly coat, which is longer and silkier on the ears and head. The coat comes in silver, blue and sandy, sometimes with tan spots. Bedlington Terriers do not shed but must be trimmed and groomed on a regular basis, so that they will look neat and healthy. The dog stands 16-17 inches high at the shoulder and weighs 17-23 pounds. In general, these dogs are healthy, but show proneness to Copper Storage Disease, an inherited liver problem, which is a very serious malfunction. Bedlington Terrier Dogs live around 13-14 years, which is longer than most domestic dog breeds.
