Bedlington Terriers - General Description
Bedlington Terriers are described as having the head of a lamb and the heart of a lion. The Bedlington Terrier is hardy, alert and graceful. Its peculiar coat is one of the hallmarks of the breed. It requires daily grooming to maintain its shape and good condition. Bedlington Terriers are considered mild and gentle dogs that love to play and please their owner.
The Bedlington Terrier's head has no stop and descends in an unbroken line from crown to nose. The small eyes are deep set. The tail is pointed. The double coat is thick. The coat colors may be blue, sandy or liver. Tan markings over the eyes and on the legs and chest are permissible. When the Bedlington Terrier is moving slowly, it has peculiar springy gait.

Bedlington Terriers - Breed History
Bedlington Terriers were originally called the Rothbury Terriers. The breed originated in Great Britain in the 1800s, and it traces its ancestry to crosses of wire-coated terriers, the Dandie Danmont Terrier and the Whippet. The roots of the breed developed from Northumberland where the early dogs were used to hunt foxes and weasels. The Bedlington Terrier's original purpose was to course a rabbit, to swim down an otter and even to fight in the pit. The dog has a sweet lamb-like appearance. However, it is known to have been a rather tough dog expressing all the rough features typical of terriers in the past. Bedlington Terriers were also used to kill rodents. Nowadays, Bedlington Terriers are popular family pets.
